pitted shallow scars - I need help
« on: May 28, 2011, 03:29:57 PM »
I have very sensitive rosacea skin.  I have had lasers over the years for the rosacea.  In 2008,  I had a new laser called laser genesis done.  Months later I noticed I had all the pitted scars all types of shapes coming up on my skin.  Swirly pitted scars and a triangle pitted scar around a half of inch.  My skin looks like rough texture with large pores.  I later found out that a lot of people are being damaged by lasers.  I went to a derm and he told me i needed fraxel.  I was not about to do it because I know of 2 people damaged by it.

So over the years, I used Skin Biology Copper peptide for around 8 months or more with no luck at all.  I didnt see any difference.  I was also exfoliating but still no improvement. Then In 2009 I bought a dermaroller.  I rolled around 3 times probably spaced out around 5 months.  It is 1.5 long.  I did notice a scar looked a liitle better but not as much as I wanted it to improve.  I just bought some single length needles from owndoc.  Im hoping that it can make my scars look better.  I am 12 weeks pregnant now so I dont think Im going to be able to apply any topicals.

Will the needles help with pitted scars that came from lasers?  Any suggestions would help. Thanks so much.

Dermarolling is not recommended with serious cases of Rosacea because there is chronic inflammation involved in Rosacea and since dermarolling with long needles causes inflammation lasting up to several hours, it could potentially worsen Rosacea, just like excessive heat, cold, strong wind, acid peels, sun or any other source of potential skin irritation. However this is highly individual and what worsens Rosacea in one person doesn't worsen it in all Rosacea sufferers.

Dermarolling the scars three times is not enough to obtain satisfactory results. You should certainly continue using your dermaroller.

Single-needling is the most intensive scar treatment.

However, Genesis laser uses infrared energy that warms up the dermis and stimulates collagen. The laser light is also absorbed by pigmented clusters in the skin, this heats them up and thus destroys them. The problem is to find the right settings to be effective but not overdo it. You have to targetedly destroy the pigmented tissue or diluted blood vessels but unfortunately sometimes the heat destroys too much tissue and you end up with pitted scars. These scars could be quite deep and they might even be wider under the skin than on the skin surface. You describe them as shallow so hopefully, they are shallow. I have found a similar case here (posting #4):

You should continue dermarolling and definitely give the single needles a try but do a test patch on one scar first. If your scars are getting wider in deeper layers, needling will uncover those deeper layers and make the scar look temporarily bigger. As you continue needling, it should slowly fill up.

Do you think the single  needles will get rid of my scars from lasers?

I can only say that it is worth trying. You can try it on just one or a few scars as a test patch. It will take a long time to see results and many needling sessions are necessary.
